Overview

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) allows students to extend knowledge gained in their undergraduate degree, develop research skills that will equip them for future study at a higher degree level and work closely with an academic expert to contribute to a particular area of interest.

Entry requirements

An applicant must also comply with the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy.

International students need to meet the English Language Proficiency requirements as defined in the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy.

To be eligible to apply for admission to the course, a student must have completed a relevant bachelor degree and attained a GPA of 5.50 in that degree.

If you have completed at least two units of AQF-recognised study at bachelor level or above, we’ll assign you with a new selection rank that reflects your study level, duration, and grade point average.

If your prior study or relevant work experience has provided you with knowledge, skills or experience aligned with the learning outcomes of units in your new course, you may be eligible to gain credit for study or have your prior learning recognised. This means you may be able to complete your ACU course in a shorter timeframe.

English language requirements

Applicants require an academic IELTS minimum overall score of 6.5 (with a minimum score of 6.0 in all bands), or an equivalent acceptable test score as outlined in the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy (see English Language Proficiency).

Staff Profile

Dr Francesca Fernandez

National course coordinator Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours)

Dr Fernandez completed her Ph.D in 2003 studying the genetic variability of MDMA (or ecstasy) in rats at the Magendie Neuroscience Institute in France. In keeping with the need for scientists to constantly learn and apply new techniques, Dr Fernandez worked in Human Genetics’ field for several years at the Genomics Research Centre, Griffith University, QLD (Australia) and at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (Biopolis, Singapore) looking at memory signalling pathways using neurostem cell culture from transgenic mice. Dr Fernandez then joined the University of Wollongong where she used her multidisciplinary skills to work on research on mental health, addiction and Alzheimer's Disease. Dr Fernandez was elected as emerging young scientist in the Asia-Pacific region in 2015 with a featured three-page profile published in International Innovation.


In 2016, Dr Fernandez joined ACU where she teaches neurosciences and human physiology while continuing her research in genetics and neuroscience fields, through research collaborations in ageing, nutrigenomics, mental health and memory.
