Unit rationale, description and aim

This unit is designed to extend students’ skills and techniques of 2D studies in printmaking and may include a broad range of printmaking practices which may include lino printing, screen printing, intaglio and mono printing. The historical lineage and critical framework from which printmaking has emerged will inform the development of concepts, skills and techniques. An interdisciplinary approach taken in this unit facilitates cross-media study as well as exploring contemporary art practice in Australia and internationally.

Print as Object

This unit will extend and develop the concepts, processes and techniques of studio art areas. Project-based exercises, selected from various 2D art forms will enable students to develop skills, processes and techniques in a variety of artforms. Studio practice will be selected from 2D art forms such as print media, drawing, photography and painting. The analysis and interpretation of contemporary Australian and International artworks will offer a rich context for the students’ individual research and creation of their artwork.

Learning and teaching strategy and rationale

The assessment strategy involves exploring practical and technical skill for the development of a portfolio of work. The journal documents the application of self-directed research into contemporary art practice and techniques, and encourages critical assessment of practice.

Assessment strategy and rationale

The rationale for this unit is based in developing both a core conceptual and a technical understanding of printmaking as a creative visual medium. The assessment tasks are designed as creative responses to briefs. These briefs will emphasise both the technical and conceptual aspects of printmaking. The resultant portfolio will be assessed in relation to contemporary practices and cultures.
