Shannon specializes in the religious art and architecture of Renaissance Italy, and her primary research interests include affective piety, the ritual construction of sacred space, and the function of devotional art in vernacular culture. She is also intrigued by the role that local religious cults played in expressing and shaping social identities in late medieval towns.
As an Associate Fellow at ACU, Shannon serves as a postdoctoral researcher for Professor Peter Howard’s ARC Discovery project on ‘The Sistine Chapel and the Visual Art of Preaching’. She is also currently working on a book project derived from her dissertation, which examines fifteenth-century devotional movements surrounding Tuscan miraculous images.
Prior to ACU, Shannon received her Ph.D. in the History of Art and Architecture from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her formal education commenced at Furman University in South Carolina, where she graduated with honors in Art History. Following her Bachelor’s degree, Shannon became a fellow in Syracuse University’s graduate program in Florence, Italy and completed her Masters in Italian Art. While in Florence, she served as an intern at the Uffizi Gallery and worked as an academic lecturer for both Furman and Syracuse.
