Unit rationale, description and aim

The national Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) is an online assessment that examines aspects of an individual's personal literacy and numeracy skills. The test is comprised of two components, a literacy component and a numeracy component. It is administered externally by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER).

This zero-credit point unit provides students with a LANTITE diagnostic tool designed to develop their awareness of their personal literacy and numeracy knowledge and skills. The unit also includes simulated LANTITE questions to help students gauge their preparedness for LANTITE.

The aim of this unit is to provide students with the ability to assess themselves against LANTITE requirements and to support them by streamlining and enhancing their access to resources they may need to improve their literacy and numeracy capabilities.

On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

Content

The literacy test contains questions based on reading texts (e.g., identify, interpret, evaluate) as well as assesses technical skills of writing (e.g. syntax and grammar, spelling). 

The numeracy test contains questions in three areas: number and algebra; statistics and probability; and measurement and geometry.  

These two tests form the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Tests for Initial Teacher Education students (LANTITE) which is the nationally approved means for demonstrating that all standards have been met. 

Students are expected to complete the Literacy and Numeracy Diagnostic in the first semester of their courses. This will assist in satisfactory course progression should students need additional support and/or test attempts.

Learning and teaching strategy and rationale

LNTE110 is not a taught unit. Students are assisted in the development of personal literacy and numeracy skills through online resources and academic skills programs that assist their learning.  

Assessment strategy and rationale

Students undertake the LANTITE Diagnostic as simulated LANTITE tests. On successful completion of LNTE110, students are encouraged to enrol in the next appropriate ACER LANTITE testing window and enrol in LNTE111 to formally record the test results.  

This is a pass/fail unit. Students must complete both the literacy and numeracy hurdles to pass the unit.  

Overview of assessments

*Tests may be conducted during the Examination Period. Tests may be administered as a pencil and paper test, invigilated online or online using remote proctoring.
