Mercy Place East Melbourne is a residential aged care facility, situated in inner city Melbourne, that provides care and support for 110 people. The facility is part of Mercy Health whose mission is to deliver compassionate person-centred health, aged care and community services to those in need, at every stage of life. Our values of compassion, hospitality, respect, innovation, stewardship and teamwork guide us in all that we do.

Our residential aged care service is a non-profit, care driven service for senior members of our community. We partner with residents, family and community to create a sense of belonging and feelings of home. Our qualified and compassionate care teams support our residents to live life well, the way they choose, while actively participating in life by maintaining independence, social connections and favourite pastimes.

Volunteers play a significant role the care and support of our residents at our aged care facilities in a range of different roles. The facility currently has a large collection of books in multiple areas throughout the site that need to be gathered and then assembled in an area that will be developed into a library space.

The role

Under the supervision of the Lifestyle Coordinator, and alongside the residents at the site, the Library Development Volunteer will be responsible for:

  • Gathering all the books
  • Sorting through the books, dividing them into relevant topics
  • Designing the format of the new library
  • Cataloguing book collection
  • Developing system for recording borrowing and returning of book
