Zero Barriers is a businesses and services support project that aims to eliminate barriers for people with disability when shopping, using services or participating in activities in their local communities.

This activity will be of particular relevance to students with an interest in disability and in community health. Students will use their knowledge and skills to:

  • Educate businesses and services about accessibility and inclusion barriers encountered by people with disability.
  • Support businesses and services to become more disability friendly; and
  • Promote businesses and services that are committed to eliminating barriers for people with disability.

The role

  • Undertake phone conversations with businesses and services from Canterbury-Bankstown, Cumberland, Fairfield, Blacktown and Ryde LGA's to raise awareness about disability inclusion and the Zero Barriers project.
  • Undertake research to develop a self-assessment tool to determine business accessibility and identify areas for improvement.
  • Conduct a mapping exercise of businesses and services in participating council LGAs.
  • Assist in the development of the Zero Barriers Accessibility Guide, which will offer research-based tips and suggestion to become more accessible and inclusive.
  • Contribution to the Zero Barriers monthly newsletter which contains useful resources, links and training opportunities.
  • Assist in the data collation and directory development of participating businesses and services.
  • Assist in the delivery of the Zero Barriers Business networking and information sessions, facilitated by participating councils.
  • In the event of an extended lock-down students will be able to complete the activity online and tasks adjusted as required.
