Do you want to become a teacher? ACU is proud to partner with the Queensland Department of Education to offer Queensland applicants enrolled in the Master of Teaching (Secondary) degree additional support through the Turn to Teaching Internship Program.

Successful applicants will receive a scholarship, paid internship teaching position and an offer of a permanent teaching position on graduation.

Applications for 2025 open from Monday 26 August and close Sunday 22 September. Applications can be made from the Teach Queensland website.

Funding and support

You will receive:

  • financial support of $20,000 (taxed) in your first year of full-time study
  • a full-time paid internship at a Queensland state school with a reduced teaching load (50 per cent) while you complete your second year of study
  • a supervising teacher, mentor and access to a community of practice to share experiences and hear from experts in the field
  • an offer of a permanent teaching position upon graduation in a Queensland state school in a priority subject area or in a rural or regional area.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for the Turn to Teaching Internship Program, you must have an undergraduate bachelor's degree (minimum three years) in a field other than education or teaching, have not previously commenced study in an Initial Teacher Education (ITE) course and are eligible for enrolment into the ACU Master of Teaching (Secondary) course.

You will need to:

  • be willing to undertake an internship at any state school in Queensland
  • be willing to commence and successfully complete full-time study in 2024
  • be willing to undertake an internship at any state secondary school located in Queensland in the second year of your course
  • demonstrate commitment to teach in a Queensland state school in a priority subject area including English, mathematics, science, technologies and languages, teach in an in-demand subject area within a special education setting and/or teach in priority locations including rural and remote placements for two to three years
  • be an Australian citizen or have permanent residency status in Australia.

Students who specialise in other subject areas may also apply; however, preference will be given to applicants who specialise in priority subject areas and are willing to work in priority locations.

How to apply

Applicants wishing to start the program for the 2024 intake will need to enrol in the Master of Teaching (Secondary) through ACU and apply for the Turn to Teaching (TTT) Internship Program at the same time. You will be required to show proof of offer into the ITE course to the TTT project team.

Applications for the internship open 1 August and close 24 September 2023.

Program conditions

Successful applicants of the Turn to Teaching Internship Program will be required to follow specified conditions over the period of the program contract of employment.

Year 1 scholarship year

Participants must successfully complete the full-time course program map.

Year 2 internship year

Participants must:

  • adhere to the course program map
  • obtain a permission to teach with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT)
  • accept a conditional offer of permanent employment as a teacher in a Queensland state school in an in-demand subject area and/or location
  • graduate from the ACU ITE course by the end of the second year of the TTT Internship Program.
