Holidays more plentiful for private school students

Why do private school students get more holidays than their counterparts from public schools?

As students and educators celebrate the end of the 2023 school year, the divide is even more stark with private schools often wrapping up weeks before government schools.

ACU Senior Lecturer in Educational Leadership and former school principal Dr Paul Kidson has written a piece for The Conversation addressing the common remark that parents of private school students pay more for them to go less.

Dr Kidson, of ACU’s School of Education, outlines the historical and modern-day reasons behind the discrepancy, and notes that it is not only the duration of school holidays that differ across the country and between school sectors, but also the timing.

As Dr Kidson further points out, while Australian students spend more hours in school than any other OECD country, extra time in the classroom does not necessarily mean better results.
