Joane Lampe is ready to take the sports world by storm

Joane Lampe came to ACU feeling worried about finding a job. Now, she's planning a career as a female leader in sport.

What made you want to study at ACU?

First of all, it was because the university takes a hands-on approach to learning, and also because of the industry connections and the networking that's part of so many ACU courses. I know that I will get real-world experience, which will of course increase my employability. That's very important for me. I'm a little bit anxious about finding a job in this economy, but I feel ACU will help me achieve that.

You're studying the Bachelor of High Performance Sport. What has the learning experience been like for you?

First of all, I must say the quality is surprisingly high, higher than I thought it would be. Every lecture links back to the learning outcomes, and I feel supported all the way through. One thing I like is having several assignments or essays throughout the semester - in Germany, where I've previously studied, you have a 100% final exam and that's it. Here, I have at least four or five assessments for each subject, which helps with study anxiety. I've learned a lot about myself - I've found my own learning style, and that definitely increased my confidence.

You mentioned industry experiences - what sort of work-integrated learning opportunities have you had in your degree?

In the first semester, in the high performance sport class, we had an assignment to observe a high-performance training session. I was able to see a sailing training session and a rugby training session. It was very interesting - I felt like I was part of something. I've always wondered what will my future look like? What will my future job look like? After these experiences, I could picture it.

ACU is known for being a supportive place to study. What sort of support have you received since you started your course?

The teachers are definitely very friendly, very patient. The teaching style makes it enjoyable - you feel like you're a part of something and you're guided through your studies. I feel safe and I feel good. There are also quite a lot of support services on campus. I think the biggest one is mental health support for students and study guidance through the Academic Skills Unit.

You're now over halfway through your degree. What are your future goals?

To be a coach in high-performance sports - in soccer and in surfing. want to, be a woman in the high performance sport industry and hopefully become a role model for girls in the future, especially because there aren't many female mentors in the industry. And who knows, maybe I'll be part of the Olympics in Brisbane!

Study high-performance sport and complete 200 hours of real-world industry experience as part of your degree. It's just one of more than 30,000 work-integrated learning opportunities available at ACU every year. Talk to our international student support team to find out where an ACU degree can take you.
