Eric Tamrakar is turning his ACU degree into a finance career

The ACU Bachelor of Commerce was a stepping stone into Eric’s first corporate job.

You studied a Bachelor of Commerce. Why did you choose this degree?

I completed my high school education as an A-level graduate in commerce, which led to my decision to study abroad — I wanted to broaden my perspectives and capabilities. My decision to pursue the ACU Bachelor of Commerce was driven by my keen interest in understanding the intricacies of the business world and the economic factors that influence it. ACU's strong focus on academic excellence and personal development also aligns with my educational and career goals.

You’re originally from Nepal. What brought you to Australia?

I have always been a firm believer that proper education transcends classroom boundaries. Beyond being globally renowned for academic excellence, Australia is a vibrant and multicultural setting with a high quality of life that offered me numerous opportunities for personal development and hands-on learning. As I delved into the experiences of international students, I found overwhelmingly positive responses that solidified Australia as my choice.

Can you share some thoughts on your ACU experience? What was it like and how has it helped to progress your career?
Pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce at ACU was a transformative experience. I found the curriculum well-rounded as it combined both theoretical and practical learning tasks. This proved to be a critical stepping stone in achieving my career goals and has helped me achieve my first corporate job. As a finance coordinator in the educational sector, I often draw on the knowledge I gained at ACU.

Did you receive any financial support while you were studying?
I successfully applied for the ACU International Student Scholarship, which covered 50% of my tuition fees. Having this financial support enabled me to focus more on my studies and dedicate more time to extra-curricular activities that enhance my learning and networking opportunities.

Beyond the classroom, how did your time at ACU shape your personal and professional life?
ACU is widely known for its and commitment to social justice, which resonated with my values. It was also a very supportive community — notably, ASKACU, ACU's in-house student enquiry platform, was very helpful in answering my non-academic-related enquiries. Additionally, the university's impressive community and industry connections in business helped me build my professional network.

Students who enrol in a Business or IT degree at ACU’s North Sydney campus in 2024 will receive the ACU Business and IT scholarship, which provides a 25% tuition fee reduction. ACU also offers a suite of scholarships for international students. Use our Find a Scholarship tool to find out more.
