EFTSL value of units : All 10 cp units in this course have an EFTSL value of 0.125. Units with a cp value of a multiple of 10 have corresponding EFTSL values.

Admission requirements

An applicant must also comply with the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy.

To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must have completed:

  1. A bachelor degree, or any one of the Graduate Certificate in Catholic Studies, Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies, Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Catholic Culture, Graduate Diploma in Theological Studies, Graduate Certificate in Religious Education, or Postgraduate Certificate in Education or equivalent; and
  2. have a minimum of one year’s professional experience in the Catholic sector.

Completion requirements

To qualify for the degree, a student must complete 120 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, as follows:

  1. 20 cp from Specified Units including introductory units in biblical studies and theology (where these have not previously been completed) (Part A);
  2. 70 cp from Elective units from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, including no less than 50 cp at 600-level (Part B and Part C);
  3. 30 cp from Research Units (Part D).


A student entering the degree having previously completed one of the Graduate Certificate in Catholic Studies, Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies, Graduate Certificate in Religious Education, or Postgraduate Certificate in Education or equivalent must complete 80 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, as follows:

  1. 50 cp from Elective units from the Schedule of Unit Offerings (selected to ensure that including those units undertaken as part of qualifications listed at 2.2 above, and those listed at 2.2 (b) below (Part B), no fewer than 80 cp will have been undertaken at 600-level) (Part C);
  2. 30 cp from Research Units (Part D).


A student entering the degree having previously completed the Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Catholic Culture must complete 80 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, as follows:

  1. THBS605 Gospels of the Liturgical Year (Part C);
  2. 40 cp from Elective units from the Schedule of Unit Offerings (selected to ensure that including those units undertaken as part of qualifications listed at 2.2 above, and those listed at 2.2 (c) below (Part B), no fewer than 80 cp will have been undertaken at 600-level) (Part C);
  3. 30 cp from Research Units (Part D).


A student entering the degree having previously completed the Graduate Diploma in Theological Studies or equivalent must complete 40 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, as follows:

  1. 10 cp from Elective units from the Schedule of Unit Offerings (selected to ensure that including those units undertaken as part of qualifications listed at 2.3 above, and those listed at 2.3 (b) below (Part B), no fewer than 80 cp will have been undertaken at 600-level) (Part C);
  2. 30 cp from Research Units (Part D).

Exit points

A student who has completed the requirements for the Graduate Diploma in Theological Studies (80 cp of a 120 cp program) may exit with that award.

A student who has completed the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies or Graduate Certificate in Catholic Studies (40 cp of a 120 cp program) may exit with that award.

Progression requirements

In all aspects of progress through the course, students will be advised by the Course Coordinator and bound by decisions of the Head of School.
