Unit rationale, description and aim

How to identify, generate and respond to evidence is at the core of any doctoral study. A fundamental challenge confronting beginning researchers in a professional doctoral program is the identification of a research problem grounded in professional practice. This unit therefore aims to assist candidates to clarify their research problem by analysing the context from which it is derived and by deconstructing the threshold conceptual issues to illuminate and amplify the problem. Candidates are introduced to, and guided to use a comprehensive array of data bases and be mentored through critical reflective experiences to generate a logical narrative, culminating in the justified articulation of their research problem as they appreciate it at this early stage of candidature. This outcome provides the foundation for a synthesised and analytical literature review to be attempted in the following unit. This unit develops an understanding of education in a global society as well as an understanding of how we know about education and, how to read, and act on, educational research.
