Unit rationale, description and aim
Media plays a central role in our lives and content delivered via a screen is increasingly the main platform of delivery. Media produced for the screen is powerful and ubiquitous particularly evidenced with the growth of social media and smart phone technology and plays a significant role in developing community attitudes and opinions. In order to make a contribution to this process, Media students need to understand the production processes involved with producing video in order to successfully communicate their ideas. Such knowledge will enable them to be producers of media and not merely consumers. This necessitates an attainment of the skills necessary to create their stories and enable them to help enriching society through this means of communicating. Such skills will have wide application in a range of industries.
This unit will introduce students to a range of video production techniques and their associated specialised skills. Students will learn the basic technical and aesthetic skills to create and produce a short digital screen production. suitable for a range of video platforms.
MEDA100 will provide students with the skills necessary to become producers of video content suitable for a range of work-related environments and video platforms.

On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

Content
Topics will include:
An introduction to basic skills in video production leading to an understanding of a range of media production processes and practices. Video production processes will be examined and practiced at an introductory level. Students will be introduced to a range of applications for the video medium and will learn to apply the techniques to completed production.
Learning and teaching strategy and rationale
In MEDA100 students will be asked to demonstrate their engagement with video software and hardware, technology and cultural forms, at an introductory level. Assessments have been designed to facilitate students in demonstrating and applying their skills to recognised industry style outputs for video production which will enable them to be more work-ready.
Assessment strategy and rationale
A range of assessment procedures will be used that combine to meet the learning outcomes and graduate attributes of the unit, consistent with University assessment requirements. Such procedures may include the demonstration of applied knowledge of camera operation and editing skills, scriptwriting or storyboarding and video production.
