Prerequisites

CHEM103 Introduction to Chemistry , BIOL123 Cells and Tissues - the Fabric of Life

Unit rationale, description and aim

Various techniques underpin molecular approaches used to investigate and manipulate a cell's DNA to both diagnose and treat human disease. Information gained using these methods has spearheaded medical breakthroughs in drugs, forensics, diagnostics and disease treatment. This unit will build on foundations developed in introductory chemistry and biology, to provide an introduction to molecular biological methods used to manipulate DNA/RNA and how genome sequence data are generated and used to guide diagnosis and treatment of disease. Students will develop their knowledge and communication and problem solving skills through the use of instrumentation in practical settings and through the analysis of scientific findings and preparation of written reports.
