Unit rationale, description and aim

This unit introduces foundational principles of chemistry relevant to further study of human biochemistry and biology. Topics will include atomic structure, elements, molecules, compounds, chemical bonding, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, acids, bases, pH, and buffers. The unit will also include a study of carbon containing compounds with particular reference to key biomolecules and their involvement in biological processes. Students will also develop laboratory skills through a comprehensive practical component.
