Unit rationale, description and aim

This unit aims to provide students with an overview of organic chemistry with a strong emphasis to the importance of organic substances in the natural and built environment. The nomenclature, structure, properties and reactivity of major classes of organic and bioorganic compounds are studied. Stereoisomerism, reactivity and the mechanisms of some significant chemical reactions are examined including the classification of hazardous chemicals and their regulations for safe practice. The unit also includes a comprehensive laboratory component, based on a range of organic preparative and analytical techniques. Students will gain further experience with practical experimentation and in the written reporting and analysis of scientific findings.
