Unit rationale, description and aim

This unit recognises and supports the important role of Indigenous perspectives, stories and history in education. Drawing on rich cultural, linguistic and historical positions, particular focus is given to identifying the contribution Indigenous knowledge can make to furthering social justice, reconciliation and deepening understandings as a means to addressing the inconsistencies and gaps in contemporary Australian education. Implications for policy and practice in educational settings in terms of Indigenous perspectives will be critically examined, as will be the under representation of Indigenous children in Australian early years settings.

The unit will include an exploration of Indigenous pedagogies as they pertain to children in the early years with focus on the role of the professional as a sensitive and respectful advocate. It will explore Indigenous perspectives on the UNCRC position on Indigenous children. This is consistent with the ACU Mission to build capacity in teaching practice to embody respect for human dignity.
