NilUnit rationale, description and aim
High quality early childhood programs support the young children's holistic development and establish strong foundations for their continuing success as lifelong learners. This unit introduces the early childhood context and critically examines the principles and perspectives underpinning contemporary early childhood play-based curriculum for children birth to three. Pedagogy that actively engages children in play and other worthwhile contexts for learning is critically considered from multiple perspectives and used as the framework to explore the integrative nature of professional skills of care and education including observation and documentation, relationships and provisions for learning for children birth to three. It promotes a holistic view of the young child and engenders respect for human dignity through an inclusive curriculum.
Early years educators are provided with opportunities to engage in scholarship and research and to integrate the use of ICT skills and pedagogy. Critical exploration of the dynamic and evolving nature of curriculum is aligned with the need for commitment to continuing professional growth and learning. Professional values and ethical codes of conduct are connected to all dimensions of teaching and curriculum decision-making.
