Unit rationale, description and aim

This unit focuses on design, interpretation and use of standardised tests. Statistical concepts will be introduced as a basis for consideration of the technical aspects of test construction and data analysis. The treatment of these concepts will allow each student to find their own level of comfort and expertise. Measurement theory will be approached in a similar fashion. Best practice principles for test design, implementation and use will be studied and applied through critical analysis of existing tests. Research studies on standardised test design, analysis, interpretation and effects, and various issues surrounding their use, will be used to study the substantive issues as well as to build capability in relevant data analysis and research methods. National and international tests will receive special attention. Students will analyse and interpret test data from their own or an accessible school for evaluating the quality of the test and for improving student learning.
