Unit rationale, description and aim

This unit is designed to examine the results of research studies on second language acquisition, the main theories on second language learning and teaching and the fundamental principles relating to classroom teaching practice, including those about context, topic, functions and notions and the communicative approach. The established principles of second language learning and teaching will underpin all readings and assessable tasks of the unit, as well as lesson planning. Critical appraisal of readings and resources will develop in participants the ability to select the best suitable materials. The fundamental types of teaching strategies will underpin the focus on lesson and unit planning. The main focus will be on language study in the first years of secondary schooling.
