Unit rationale, description and aim

The aim of this is unit is to provide the students with an understanding of the principles of nutrition applied to the areas of sport performance and health throughout the lifespan. The unit will describe the roles of macro- (carbohydrate, fat and protein) and micro-nutrients in energy metabolism during acute exercise bouts and chronic training regimes. Particular emphasis will be given to nutrition, in combination with exercise, in regards to its role in the prevention and treatment of chronic metabolic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Diet and exercise strategies for weight loss and the effects of eating disorders will also be examined as well as the role of dietary supplements, vitamins and ergogenic aids.
