Unit rationale, description and aim

In this unit key concepts in research methodology are introduced such as research design, the nature of community engaged research, the importance of reliability, internal and external validity, and statistical analyses. Students will further develop their skills in conducting database searches to identify research literature and in using referencing systems. Basic competencies in critically evaluating literature will be developed to prepare students for evidence-based practice including critically appraising methodology, and the analysis and interpretation of the results and discussion sections of a research paper. Students will be involved in community engaged research to inform physiotherapy practice, resources Students will engage with a community to develop and deliver an evidence-based physiotherapy resource or service relevant to the needs of the community.

This unit is part of the University Core Curriculum units in the following ways: In this unit students will undertake a community engagement experience of forty hours with a community that is experiencing disadvantage and may be from a variety of social and cultural backgrounds. Students will engage with a community in designing, developing and delivering a physiotherapy resource or service that responds to the needs of that community. Students will reflect on their personal and professional growth and development and gain new perspectives and understanding of promoting human dignity, the common good and human flourishing within the Allied Health sector. This unit will give students the opportunity to engage with local, national and international communities. This unit will build on the knowledge and experience of community engagement gained by students PHTY207.
