Unit rationale, description and aim

Qualitative research is fundamental to understanding the key factors contributing to social problems and questions. Qualitative research involves in-depth engagement with qualitative data, be it second hand sources such as newspaper articles and speeches, through to conducting primary research (fieldwork) with focus groups, in-depth interviews and ethnographic research. There are many challenges in gaining high quality qualitative data and its analysis. This unit will equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to choose the appropriate qualitative method, collect data and analyse it at a professional level. The skills acquired are fundamental to a wide variety of roles from academia to the government, professional and not for profit sectors.
