Teaching and learning activities for this unit will include lectures, small group discussions, skill development workshops and LEO online activities.

Unit rationale, description and aim

Acknowledging, respecting and learning from the experiences of Aborginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is a priority in social work practice. Social workers are responsible for ensuring their practice is culturally aware, responsive and safe. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content is essential core curriculum in social work education. This unit will introduce students to social work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It will expand students' knowledge of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people which are informed by their ways of knowing, being and doing. In particular the unit aims to develop professional skills to work effectively and collaboratively in this area of social work practice. The aim of the unit is to provide students with the opportunity to learn and value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing, being and doing in thinking holistically about experience, as relevant for social work practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and all people with whom social workers engage.
