Unit rationale, description and aim

This unit provides a critical contemporary examination of the Canon Law of the Roman Catholic Church. The ecclesiology and teaching regarding liturgy of Vatican II build the foundation for both the legislation and interpretation for the post conciliar canonical norms. These norms can be found in liturgical books, in the 1983 promulgated Code of Canon Law, subsequent universal and particular laws and in customs. The unit will address not only the laws governing the liturgical life of the church, but will also attend to those who participate in it and / or preside over the ceremonies. Attention will furthermore be paid to questions regarding the impact of ecumenism, inculturation, common and ministerial priesthood etc. on the liturgical life. This unit takes particular regard for the interrelationship between Church law, liturgical life and the Church's sacramental life.
