Admission requirements
Applicants must comply with the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy that includes meeting a minimum ATAR requirement.
International applicants need to meet the English Language Proficiency requirements as defined in the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy.
Eligibility for this course is determined via multiple factors. Applicants are assessed on each of the following to determine suitability for this course:
- Personal statement or essay,
- ATAR/Selection Rank, International Baccalaureate (IB), or equivalent,
- Performance at interview, and
- Demonstrated suitability for teaching, as evidenced by completion of the relevant State assessment, which will be provided in the application process.
To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must have completed the following prerequisites at year 12 level, or equivalent:

Definition
A Major is 80 cp in prescribed units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area, normally including at least 10 cp at 100-level, at least 40 cp at 200-level and at least 20 cp from 300-level.
A Minor is 40 cp in prescribed units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area, normally including at least 10 cp at 100-level and at least 20 cp at 200- or 300-level.
Completion requirements
To qualify for the Bachelor of Arts (Western Civilisation)/Master of Teaching (Secondary) degree, a student must complete 400 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, consisting of:
1. 240 cp from the Bachelor of Arts (Western Civilisation), consisting of:
- 140 cp from Western Civilisation Specified Units (Part A)
- 10 cp from Community Engagement Unit (Part B)
- 80 cp from Bachelor of Arts Units (Part C)
- 1 Bachelor of Arts Major (Part C1); OR
- 1 Bachelor of Arts Minor (Part C2); AND 40 cp of Electives Units from the Bachelor of Arts (Part C3)
- 10 cp from Bachelor of Arts elective units (Part D)
2. 160 cp from the Master of Teaching (Secondary), consisting of:
- 100 cp from Education Studies and Effective Teaching Units (Part E)
- 40 cp from Curriculum Studies Units (Part F)
- 20 cp from Education Elective Units (Part G)
- 0 cp from ACER Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Units (Part H)
Other requirements
Students are required to follow the pattern of unit enrolment set out in the relevant Course Enrolment Guide, unless otherwise approved by the Course Coordinator. In all aspects of progress through the course, students will be advised by the Course Coordinator.
Students will complete a first or second teaching area in English in the undergraduate component of the course and should seek course advice about teaching areas.
Applicants seeking teacher registration in Australia should check with state registration bodies to confirm English Language Proficiency requirements for teacher registration.
Exit points
A student who has successfully completed the following requirements may exit from the course with that qualification. Note that none of these qualifications will lead to teacher registration.
- Diploma in Liberal Arts: 80 cp from Parts A-D.
- Bachelor of Arts (Western Civilisation): 240 cp from Parts A-D.
- Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies: 40 cp from Parts E-G.
- Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies: 80 cp from Parts E-G.
A student who has successfully completed the Master of Teaching (Secondary) but does not meet the LANTITE requirements may exit with the Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies or Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies if they meet the requirements of those awards.
Progression requirements
1. Bachelor of Arts (Western Civilisation}:
Unless otherwise specified, students must complete a unit or units at an introductory level (100-level) in an approved sequence before undertaking advanced level units (200 or 300-level) in that sequence.
All students progressing to the Master of Teaching (Secondary) must:
- Have successfully completed the Bachelor of Arts (Western Civilisation) with:
- a major study in one teaching area; and
- a separate minor study in a second teaching area, that may be separate from or related to the major study area;
- be able to select from teaching areas that are available within the course and meet the requirements of the applicant's local state/territory registration authority; and
- the combination of teaching areas identified would usually prepare the applicant to teach across all year levels of secondary schooling.
- Have the appropriate approvals before they may enter a classroom. These are Blue Card (Queensland), Working with Vulnerable People Registration (Australian Capital Territory), or Working with Children Check (New South Wales and Victoria). International students must bring police check documentation from their own countries.
To meet the requirements for working in settings other than schools, a National Police check may be required. All students who have lived in another country for 12 months or more must provide a police check from that country for that period.
