Unit rationale, description and aim

The contemporary workforce requires culturally competent graduates able to apply knowledge and skills derived from learning experiences that develop a deeper knowledge of the world and a heightened awareness of different peoples and cultures.

GLST304 requires students to enhance the study undertaken in their Global Studies degree via either study at ACU’s Rome campus, or one of ACU's international partner universities. In exceptional circumstances where students are not able to travel for a semester, a student may be allowed to undertake this unit in Australia via internationally focused coursework or as a short international travel experience (STISE) combined with internationally focused coursework.

The aim of this unit a deeper knowledge of the world inside and outside Australia and make Global Studies graduates more employable in the global marketplace.

Students in the Bachelor of International Development Studies Degree may opt to study overseas.

Prerequisites

For students in the Bachelor of Global Studies Degrees:

HIST115 Global History: Six Degrees of Separation AND POLS104 Introduction to International Relations AND SOCS101 Global Society and Change OR

For students in the Bachelor of International Development Studies:

DVST100 Introduction to International Development Studies ANDDVST101 Humanitarian Work and Aid

IMPORTANT: This unit is subject to a strict application and approval process. Only students who have received formal Faculty approval for their proposed internship can enrol in the unit.

Learning and teaching strategy and rationale

Students will study the unit at an international partner university or in an international unit approved by the National School of Arts and Humanities. Teaching and learning strategies will vary according to the country chosen and the option selected. 

In exceptional circumstances, students may be allowed to undertake this experience in Australia via internationally-focused coursework. These exceptions operate as per section 5.6 of the Academic Regulations.
