Unit rationale, description and aim

This unit focuses on the safe use of both pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies encountered in midwifery practice; during pregnancy, the post-partum period and breastfeeding for women and neonates. Pharmacological principles introduced in the previous units will be extended and applied to drugs commonly used in the childbearing process as well as those used for childbearing women with illness. An evidence based practice approach is used to evaluate common over the counter preparations and other therapies used during pregnancy, labour and lactation.
