Unit rationale, description and aim
This microcredential addresses the critical need for institutions to take accountability for safeguarding and preventing abuse. Informed by the findings of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, it focuses on identifying children at risk and the systemic failures that have historically enabled abuse. By understanding these past failures, institutions can create more effective and ethical responses that prioritise prevention.
Participants will analyse how institutional practices and cultures have contributed to abuse, as highlighted by the Royal Commission. The microcredential examines both failures and successes in institutional responses, focusing on strategies to enhance safeguarding and prevent abuse. Participants will learn how to meet legal obligations while fostering a proactive, prevention-focused culture that protects vulnerable individuals.
The aim of this microcredential is to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to create and implement legally compliant and effective safeguarding measures. By addressing institutional factors that place children at risk, participants will be able to strengthen prevention efforts and ensure safer environments in their institutions.

- Prevention and response strategies for creating effective institutional approaches to both responding to and preventing child abuse, with a focus on upholding children’s rights.
- Case examples that highlight both successful and failed responses to child abuse to identify what contributes to effective safeguarding, with emphasis on respecting and promoting children’s rights as a preventative measure.
Assessment strategy and rationale
The assessment strategy in this microcredential is designed to assess participants’ ability to apply their understanding of safeguarding children within institutional contexts. The primary task, creating a safeguarding resource, allows participants to develop a practical, institution-specific solution focused on Principle 1 of the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations. This assessment emphasises the importance of embedding child safety and wellbeing within organisational culture and governance. By integrating reflective analysis, participants are encouraged to critically evaluate past safeguarding challenges and apply evidence-based strategies to improve institutional responses. This reflective component deepens their understanding by connecting theoretical knowledge with real-world applications.
Overview of assessments
The assessment task for this microcredential is designed to demonstrate achievement of each of the learning outcomes. In order to pass this microcredential, students are required to meet the learning outcomes and achieve a minimum overall passing grade of 50% for the assessment task.
