Before completing a course or unit, all students must show they’ve met the inherent requirements of that course or unit. Inherent requirements are essential components that, if skipped, would substantially impact on course learning outcomes.

About inherent requirements

Inherent requirements are the essential components of a course or unit that demonstrate the capabilities, knowledge and skills to achieve the core learning outcomes of the course or unit.

Students with a disability or chronic health condition may be able to have reasonable adjustments made to enable them to meet these requirements.

ACU is committed to making reasonable adjustments to teaching and learning, assessment, placement and other activities to enable students to participate in their course. Reasonable adjustments must not fundamentally change the nature of the inherent requirement.

We give consideration to any cultural and religious background/beliefs, which may impact your participation in a course or unit. For further information, contact your Course Coordinator.

Inherent requirements are specific to a particular course. In the university context, compulsory requirements are broader and can include:

  • compliance with the policies, procedures and regulations which are applicable to all students at ACU
  • the mandatory requirements associated with the course of study, eg attendance, completion of assignments.

Inherent requirements ensure the academic integrity of a course is maintained and preserves the University’s learning, assessment and accreditation processes. They must be met by all students.

In order to know if you meet the inherent requirements, you first need to understand the terminology we use to describe them. Read how we define inherent requirements domains, and important terms such as reasonable adjustments, on our key terms page.
