ACT Government Implementation Strategy, 2006-2007
In response to the 2004 Territory as Parent and ACT Child Protection Management (Vardon) reports, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Government launched Implementation Strategy 2006-2007 aimed at reforming care and protection services for children and young people. One core objective was to improve support and services specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people and their families.
This project sought to enhance service delivery and elevate the voices of Indigenous children and young people in decision-making processes. The team worked with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Services (ATSIS), Vardon Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Reference Group, a large number of Aboriginal workers and services, and numerous community organisations to conduct the research. Children and young people participated in youth forums in Canberra and Wreck Bay.
The team developed case studies to highlight the lived experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth in out-of-home care. They also made recommendations for enhanced consultation practices and service improvements.
