Definition

A Major is 80 cp in prescribed units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area, normally including at least 10 cp at 100-level, at least 40 cp at 200-level and at least 20 cp from 300-level.

A Minor is 40 cp in prescribed units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area, normally including at least 10 cp at 100-level and at least 20 cp at 200- or 300-level.

Completion requirements

To qualify for the Bachelor of Arts/Master of Teaching (Secondary) degree a student must complete 360 cp consisting of:

1. 240 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, for the Bachelor of Arts degree, consisting of:

  1. 160 cp from:
  2. 2 Arts Majors (Part A) OR
  3. 1 Arts Major (Part B) and 2 Arts Minors (Part C) OR
  4. 1 Arts Major (Part B) and 1 Arts Minor (Part D) and 40 cp of Arts Elective Units (Part E)
  5. 10 cp from Community Engagement Unit (Part F)
  6. 40 cp from Education Studies Units (Part G)
  7. 10 cp from Bachelor of Arts Elective Unit (Part H)
  8. 20 cp from Core Curriculum Units (Part I)

2. 120 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, for the Master of Teaching (Secondary) degree, consisting of:

  1. 60 cp from Education Studies and Effective Teaching Units (Part J)
  2. 40 cp from Secondary Curriculum Studies Units (Part K)
  3. 20 cp from Education Elective Units (Part L)
  4. 0 cp from ACER Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Units (Part M)

Other requirements

Students must pass all professional experience components, including professional experience embedded within units.

Students are required to follow the pattern of unit enrolment set out in the relevant Course Enrolment Guide unless otherwise approved by the Course Coordinator.

Applicants seeking teacher registration in Australia should check with state registration bodies to confirm English Language Proficiency requirements for teacher registration.

Exit points

A student who has successfully completed the following requirements may exit from the course with that qualification. Note that none of these qualifications will lead to teacher registration.

  1. Diploma in Liberal Arts: 80 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings of the Bachelor of Arts.
  2. Bachelor of Arts: 240 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings of the Bachelor of Arts
  3. Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies: 80 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings of the Master of Teaching (Secondary).
  4. Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies: 40 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings of the Master of Teaching (Secondary

Students may be able to exit with two degrees, (Diploma in Liberal Arts or a Bachelor of Arts; and a Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies or a Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies), depending on their progress in this degree.

Progression requirements

1. Bachelor of Arts

Unless otherwise specified, students must complete a unit or units at an introductory level (100-level) in an approved sequence before undertaking advanced level units (200 or 300-level) in that sequence. Any additional prerequisites for individual units are shown in brackets after the unit in the Schedule of Unit Offerings.

A student may, with the approval of the Course Coordinator, undertake cross-institutional study in order to satisfy the requirements, in whole or in part, of:

  1. a Major or a Minor in a language other than English; and/or
  2. a Major in any discipline, where the student has completed a Minor in that discipline at this University

2. Master of Teaching (Secondary)

 All students progressing to the Master of Teaching (Secondary) must:

  1. Have successfully completed the Bachelor of Arts
  2. a major study in one teaching area; and
  3. a separate minor study in a second teaching area, that may be separate from or related to the major study area.
  4. be able to select from teaching areas that are available in the course and meet the requirements of the applicant's local state/territory registration
  5. authority; and
  6. the combination of teaching areas identified would usually prepare the applicant to teach across all year levels of secondary schooling.
  7. Have the appropriate approvals before they may enter a classroom. These are Blue Card (Queensland) or Working with Children Check (New South Wales and Victoria).

International students must bring police check documentation from their own countries. To meet the requirements for working in settings other than schools, a National Police check may be required. All students who have lived in another country for 12 months or more must provide a police check from that country for that period.
