Improving disciplinary literacy in senior high school industrial technology

Australian Catholic University (ACU) is offering a PhD scholarship to undertake research into the multimodal literacy of practically- and technologically-oriented school subjects in Sydney, Australia.

The successful applicant will work on an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project investigating the multimodal literacy demands of practically-oriented subjects, and pedagogies for supporting these literacy demands. Drawing on systemic functional linguistics/semiotics and Sydney school genre pedagogy, this will include a focus on literacy in senior secondary school industrial technology education (involving construction in timber, metals, graphics and/or multimedia), and one other practically-oriented subject, which, depending on the interest of the PhD candidate and availability at participating schools, may include:

  • textiles
  • design & technology
  • food technology
  • visual art
  • Other practically- or vocationally-oriented subjects.

The PhD candidate will be integral to the project, working collaboratively with the research team, including Associate Professor Yaegan Doran (ACU), Professor Len Unsworth (ACU) and Professor J. R. Martin (The University of Sydney).

Opportunities for theoretical, descriptive, and applied mentoring in systemic functional linguistics and collaborative publishing will be available.
